What’s the West Highland Way? Is it for me?

The West Highland Way is a renowned long-distance walking trail in Scotland, spanning approximately154 km from Milngavie, near Glasgow, to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The route passes through diverse landscapes, including rolling hills, rugged moorlands, dense forests, and shimmering lochs, offering hikers a truly immersive experience in Scotland’s natural beauty.

Along the way, walkers encounter a variety of terrain, from well-maintained paths to rocky sections and occasional steep ascents and descents. The trail leads through charming villages and historic sites, providing opportunities to learn about Scottish culture and heritage.

The trail is suitable for a wide range of hikers, from experienced trekkers seeking a challenge to beginners looking to embark on their first long-distance hike. Do we need cash?

The daily program, including the activities, transportation and accommodation with breakfast are included in your itinerary. You will need cash for any souvenir shopping, snacks, lunch, and dinner meals along the way.

Scotland uses the British Pound (£), and dining costs is usually around £20-£40 per meal. For an overall daily budget, a range of £50-£120 should cover any extra cash needed.

If you don’t prefer to carry a lot of cash, most places are visa or MasterCard friendly.

كيف هو الطقس؟

Scotland is known to have the moodiest weather on the planet!

Although June is typically Summer in Scotland, its hiking trails offer mild weather, averaging between 10 to 20 degrees Celsius and can be changeable and unpredictable, so be ready for a mix of sunny and rainy days during your hike.

Pack waterproof gear, sturdy hiking boots, and layers to stay comfortable. The longer daylight hours in June give you extra time to enjoy outdoor activities.

هل أحتاج إلى تأشيرة للدخول؟

Citizens of any GCC country can enter the UK for short visits with an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW).

If you’re of another nationality or would like to apply/have more information, please follow the link: https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration.

Is a certain level of fitness required for the hike?

Yes! This trip requires a high fitness level as you will be hiking through 20 km trails daily of varied terrain including some steep ascents and descents.

Make sure to spare two to three months of training depending on how active you generally are while having both endurance and stamina as a goal, while strengthening your leg muscles for the hike.

Are we going to carry all our luggage by ourselves throughout the hike?

You will only be responsible for carrying your daypack which has the things that you might need before you reach the next camp.

Every morning, you will be asked to place your luggage at a certain place in the accommodation that you will be in, and a transportation agency will oversee moving your luggage from one place to another.

Your maximum weight will be 20kg for the luggage.

How long will we be hiking every day?

“How much longer?” The most frequent question we get during the climb and the last question that you should think about!

The trek is lengthy at 154 km (one way), but if you factor in walking an average of 20 km a day for 7 days, it becomes manageable.

The time spent during the trail will vary each day depending on the terrain itself and the overall speed of the group. Don’t worry, it’s never a race and we are known to take our time and get all this Scottish beauty in!

Are there any specific clothes required for this trip?

Once your registration is confirmed, you’ll receive a detailed packing list specifying the suitable attire for the activities of the trip, more specifically hiking gear.

In general, the weather will be pleasant but unpredictable so having rain gear and being prepared for different conditions is the best tip we can give you to ensure a more enjoyable trip.

How's the food along the trail?

You’ll find various dining options in towns and villages along the route, including pubs, cafes, and shops. You can expect traditional Scottish fare such as soups, sandwiches made with locally sourced ingredients, freshly baked pastries, and hearty stews. Additionally, you’ll find a selection of hot and cold beverages to quench your thirst, including tea and coffee. Many establishments also offer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options to cater to different dietary preferences.

While these spots provide tasty treats, bringing along some of your favorite snacks ensures you’re prepared for any craving or remote stretch of the journey.

We heard that the trail has an insect situation! What should we do?

What you heard was correct!

The insects are called flying Midges and they usually show up in June, July and August. You won’t really need to worry about them, but if insects generally bother you, insect repellent sprays will be a good idea to have. The type that is sold along the route is highly recommended, so you’ll be able to purchase it once you arrive.

أين نقطة اللقاء؟

Once you book your tickets, make sure you share it with the journey’s team. Transportation will be arranged from the airport to the hotel.

What are the types of accommodations, and will they be shared?

On this trip we’ll be staying at a mix of small, mostly locally owned hotels, simple B&Bs, traditional guesthouses as well as a castle or a cottage experience after the hike!

As for the room sharing, yes, the accommodation will be shared, usually on a twin-share basis. Some of the guest houses might have more than two people in one room but that will be a rarity.

كيف هو وضع الحمام؟

You will be sleeping in shared accommodation basis so bathrooms will be shared.
